REPORT Ninth day , February 20 Race : Slalom for women Weather conditions : Sun in the first round and then snow starts in the second descent of the race. Temperature at the starting point: 2 – 5°C, at the finish 2 – 6°C Track condition : compacted snow. Participating skiers : 92 Race start time : 13:30 The last race of the women's championship. Katharina Liensberger closed the World Ski Championships in Cortina as a surprise champion, winning three medals, including today's gold in the slalom. The 23-year-old Austrian dominated the race today, winning by exactly one second over Slovakian Petra Vlhova's slalom ranking. Liensberger entered the second round of this race with a 0.30 second advantage over Vlhova and even managed to double the lead before crossing the finish line. An impressive feat considering the very warm temperatures and sunshine on the snow all day. This victory brings the number of medals for Liensberger to two gold and one bronze, leaving Cortina with three in total. Liensberger's gold medal today ended an impressive medal dominance in World Championships history, as USA's Mikaela Shiffrin had won the last four slalom gold medals. Today she dropped to third place, finishing almost two seconds behind the winner Liensberger. But while that streak of four straight victories came to an end today, Shiffrin's bronze-winning performance still gave her the most medals she has collected of any female skier in Cortina, with four in total, two bronzes, a silver and a gold. In every event/competition that Shiffrin entered at the World Championships, she always won at least one medal. For Vlhova, today's silver brings her total in Cortina to two silver medals. Much was expected anyway from the current World Cup leader. The two-second gap between the three medal winners shows how good Liensberger was today and nobody stood a chance against her. While the World Championships closed with the women's Slalom race, all eyes are now on the overall World Cup title, which will resume one weekend in Val di Fassa for the speed race. Will Lara Gut be able to maintain her momentum and go for the overall title? Will Vlhova regain its form in this second phase? How will Liensberger react to her newfound success? And what tricks does Shiffrin still have up his sleeve? These and many other questions will be answered in the last month of the season, that is, in March. ___________ #VizionSportivOraCampioneve Pjerin B.
