Shtjefen Palushi
(June 28, 1943 – July 18, 1985)
From a young age, almost a child, Tefa was talented and had an artistic inclination. Bearing this in mind, he was helped by Prof. Vladimir Jani to register at the Artistic High School. From the banks of the Liceu, his penchant for caricature stood out, a very special genre of graphics and little known at that time in Albania.
The well-known painter Zef Bumçi unreservedly helps the young talent, who for a short time becomes known through the pages of the “Hosteni” magazine. Within a few years, he also participates in international exhibitions, where Palushi also wins artistic awards. In addition to illustrations for the magazine, Tefa is also involved in book illustrations and caricature works that she presents in local exhibitions in Shkodra and national exhibitions in Tirana.
He is almost constantly honored with awards for artistic merit. Among other things, Tefa was the first applicant in Albania of caricature in textiles. He was a member of the League of Artists.
Those who knew Palushi, remember his caricatures in the pages of “Hosteni” magazine, drawings with cutting humor, sharp and quite meaningful. In this field, Tef Palushi was next with a special style that was recognized by everyone. Undoubtedly, he was one of the greatest cartoonists that Albania had.
In appearance, although with a pronounced handicap that made it difficult to articulate words, he was a completely different artist who was characterized by an inner force of ideas and creative fantasy.
Thousands of cartoons with creativity and originality under the firm “Tefa” were also published in periodicals which dedicated special pages to them, not only “Hosteni” but also “Drita”, “Ylli”, “Nentori”, etc.
Tefa was also famous for his humor, for his ready-made and surprising jokes, as well as for many “barceletta” masterpieces that make Shkodran humor. So Shkodran Humor would not be complete without that of Shtjefen Palushi, but even the Albanian caricature in general would be lacking without the creative personality and improvisational genius with his thin and fine brush that made him known even outside the borders in Albania, in international exhibitions. To write about his full figure, hundreds of pages would not be enough, including his anecdotes and jokes. “Great Master of the Word”, “Great Master of the Pencil”!
In June of 2013, the President of the Republic, Bujar Nishani, awarded Shtjefen Palushi the title “Great Master”, posthumously, with the motivation “For the contribution of distinguished in the cultural and artistic life of the country as a cartoonist and humorist, as well as for the great influence on the development of Albanian folklore” “The healing that Tefa of Shkodra did for the poisoned and wounded hearts of all Albanians in those years, exceeded the dimensions of Shkodra and held all Albanians in hope;
It was first published since January 2014 and revised in the following years.
