One of the masterpieces of world dramaturgy is, of course, FG Lorke’s play, “Bernarda Alba’s House”.

Albanian Cinematography makes it possible for the Albanian audience in the English version of 1991.

This classic part of the theater and well-known all over the world, was also staged by the Albanian theater, whose version we were lucky enough to share with our followers.

Director: Stuart Burge & Núria Espert
Screenplay: Federico García Lorca and Robert David MacDonald.

“The House of Bernarda Alba” is a play by the Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca.
Commentators have often grouped it with Blood Wedding and Yerma as a “rural trilogy”. Garcia Lorca did not include it in his plan for a “Spanish soil trilogy” (which remained unfinished at the time of his murder). Garcia Lorca described the play in its subtitle as a drama of women in rural Spain.

The House of Bernarda Albes was Garcia Lorce’s last play, completed on June 19, 1936, two months before his death during the Spanish Civil War. The play was given for the first time on March 8, 1945 at the Avenida Theater in Buenos Aires. It focuses on the events of a house in Andalusia during a period of mourning, in which Bernarda Alba (age 60) has complete control over her five daughters Angustias (age 39), Magdalena (30), Amelia (27), Martirio. (24), and Adela (20).

The housekeeper (La Poncia) and Bernarda’s elderly mother (María Josefa) also live there. The deliberate exclusion of any male characters from the action helps build the high level of sexual tension that is present throughout the show. Pepe “el Romano”, the love of Bernarda’s daughters and Angustia’s suitor, never appears on stage. The play explores themes of oppression, passion and conformity and examines the effects of men on women.
