Piro Xëci (1927 – 2007)
Actor and director of Estrade Pogradec, director of the Puppet Theater and the same time he was active in several Albanian films of Kinostudio, although in secondary roles. Holds the title “Merited Artist”

Born in Pogradec in 1927. From a young age, his artistic tendencies were noticeable. After the liberation of the country, a broad amateur artistic and sports movement begins among young people.

Theater groups were established in the city where Piro began to participate, contributing to the preparation of the scenes, but also as an extra. Seeing his abilities as a performer, he was sent to a long-term course at the Popular Theater for directing animation troupes, where he graduated in 1948. Piru still had the desire and passion for acting, so he started and became active as an actor at the Amateur Theater of the city.

In 1962, the Professional Estrada of Pogradec was formed, where Piro Xeci would be its director. The city’s estrada for many years would be known throughout the country, receiving maximum awards and accolades.

Piro Xëci has a very important merit and contribution in the establishment of the Puppet Theater in Pogradec. Although he had his engagements in stage and theater, Piro also had a passion for puppets.

In 1952, in Pogradec, a small group of performing arts created the core of the Puppet Theater. Piro was the director, actor, scenographer and puppet maker, having success not only in the city but also outside it.

In the 1970s, the Ministry of Education decided that the Puppet Theater of Pogradec should be created as an institution in its own right and appointed Piro Xëci as the director, who was simultaneously a scenographer, puppet maker and often its librettist.

Piro stayed at the Puppet Theater until he retired but was engaged even after that.

For his merits and contribution, he holds the title “Merited Artist” and has been decorated several times by being declared “Citizen of Honor”.

We have also seen Piro Xëci engaged in several feature films such as “War mornings”, “When a film was shot”, “Small Encirclement”, “First Day of Appointment”, “After Death”, “Ballad of Kurbin”, etc. .

Today, the Puppet Theater in the city of Pogradec bears the honored name of Piro Xëci.
He passed away in 2007
