Rifat Teqja (1928-2013)
People’s Artist / Opera and Ballet Theater Conductor.
Born in Peqin on September 2, 1928. Teqja completed his higher studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow for symphonic conducting in 1958. The activity of the prominent conductor of Albanian music is closely related to the artistic life of the Theater of Opera and Ballet, where he has been active for 35 years, and where he performed many stage works among the most important of the operatic and choreographic repertoire: the operas “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, “Eugene Onegin”, “Madama Butterfly”, “La Boheme”, “Aleko”, “Le nozze di Figaro”, ballets: “The Nutcracker”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Lola”, “Fadeta”, etc. .
Teqja is credited for the realization of the main Albanian stage works, such as: the operas: “Mrika”, “Skënderbeu”, “Our Land / Toka jone”, “Borana”, “Awakening”, the ballets “Cuca e maleve”, “The Tenth Wound of Gjergj Elez Alia”, as well as for the interpretation of the basic fund of Albanian symphonic and orchestral music with the orchestra of TKOB, RTSH and the Academy of Arts.
Under his direction, dozens of works from the foreign symphonic and concert repertoire were performed for the first time in Albania. Together with Mustafa Krantja, he is the founder of the conducting class at the State Conservatory, where he made a significant contribution to the field of pedagogy.
Conductors have emerged from his conducting class who have played and continue to play an important role in Albanian musical life and beyond.
He is also the conductor of the orchestra in the recording of music for 15 feature films.
In 1995, he won the title of Professor.
He has been awarded with various national awards and holds the title of People’s Artist. Rifat Teqja passed away on August 4, 2013 at the age of 84.
