Actor, director! Holds the title "Deserved Artist" He was born on February 7, 1945 in Mallakaster. Until the age of 14, he will live between Mallakastra and Patos. He graduated from the Medical Polytechnic in 1963 and worked as an assistant physician until 1965. During this period he realizes that his path is that of art and in 1965 he begins his higher studies at the "Aleksandër Moisiu" Institute. The completion of higher studies will also coincide with his first performance in a feature film in the role of Commissioner Memo in the film "The Eighth in Bronze" that will be shown to the public in 1970. Then he would start working as a director. in State Television where he would experiment with all genres of television directing. Here we can mention the direction of the 14th Song Festival on Radio Television, or the direction of the show "Big Brother". His roles in cinematography continue even though the workload in Radio and Television was great. So in 1975 he plays Nebi Surrel in the film "Streets that seek the sun", a performance that was awarded the Medal for "Best Actor" at the 1st Albanian Film Festival held in Tirana from April 5 to 11 1976. Then other roles would continue, such as that of Besnik Struga in the film "Face to Face", or that of Vironi in the film "Small Circle". His most recent role will be that of the Teacher in the film "Red Flowers, Black Flowers" in 2003. With this film, as a director, he would appear at the International Independent Film Festival held in New York ( USA) where he will receive the "Best Film" Award. As a director, we can mention him not only for the television films "Plumba Empororit", "Flette beta bira" etc. but also for many documentary films such as: "Berati", "Bible and Quran", "Invitation from Illyria" etc. He works as a lecturer at the Film and Multimedia School "Marubi". Later he founded the film company "Zig Zag Film" where he is helped in his work as a producer and director by his wife, the well-known writer Natasha Lako, and by their son Joni Shanaj. For his artistic merits, Mevlan Shanaj was awarded the title "Merited Artist" in 1984.
