THE PREMIERES OF THE “POPULAR THEATER”
As today 60 years ago, precisely on July 30, 1965, the premiere performance of the 5-act drama “King Lear” by William Shakespeare was to be given on the stage of the “Popular Theatre” of Albania.
1965 – 2025.
“King Lear” is one of the best works of the famous writer William Shakespeare. He wrote this play around the 1600s.
Translated by Skender Luarasi.
In an information sent by the former actor of the “Popular Theater” Mr. Gjovalin Gjoka, the son of the great and People’s Artist Pjeter Gjoka, said this: The premiere of this show was actually held on the stage of the “Aleksander Moisiu” Theater in Durres for the reason that the whole troupe went to that city because at that time there was no performance and that work would be carried out for two months (July and August until September 15) in the premises of the Popular Theater stage.
The regular premiere was given around the 25th or three days later in September 1965. The play was a great success until June 1966, because the actor and People’s Artist Loro Kovaçi, who played the role of Gloster, fell ill, and in July he passed away , and the play was not played anymore.
Not as the director of the Metropol theater in Tirana, Ms. Jonida Beqo, says, that the play was given once and the regime of that time blocked it and removed it. It is good for that lady to better study the history of Albanian theater, because as I found out, she also graduated from the University of Arts with a dramatic branch.
It was expressed like this in the show of R. Magjistari. And that the play “King Lear” was staged in the Metropol theater, it was the first time that this play saw the light of the stage in the Albanian theater!
The reaction of the artist Mr. Gjovalin Gjoka is right. It is not the first time that today’s leaders of the institutions of the Albanian Theater (even in the districts) try with different statements in different panels of the Albanian televisions, but also in social networks through their private profiles, to mislead, distort, even if they can censor the contribution of that generation that created the history of our theater.
We have heard several times expressions that are not in contradiction with the reality, as it happened, that the classical performances of Shakespeare, Moliere and others were prohibited by law and we only saw the “lights of the premiere” after the 90s, when the facts with photos show that classic shows have been given since the beginning of the time with the establishment of the Albanian Theater.
It is not at all good that today’s artists, together with the leaders of theater institutions, witness distortions and lies. In the end, now the Albanian supporters know the reason why this malice is done, to highlight their “successful work”, and to censor history by even giving political colors to the Albanian theater, to deny everything, the sacrifices, the work and works that the founding artists put on stage in front of the spectator, the true witness.
