Andon Pano
April 23, 1921 – April 24, 1993
Actor / director / publicist and “Merited Artist”!
One of the rare cases is that of the artist Andon Pano, who may be the only one who passed away a day after his birthday!
Like today on this date, on April 23 of this year, the 104th anniversary of his birth is marked and a day after, that is, tomorrow on April 24, it will be 32 years since he passed away!
Respect for the “pioneer” of the scene and his contribution to the performing arts!
The Albanian actor was born in Istanbul on April 23, 1921. He spent his childhood in the village of Selce in Polican, Gjirokaster. After finishing primary school, Pano completed the normal course of Elbasan with prof. Alexander Xhuvani. During the war, he took part in the ranks of the resistance. Pano was one of the most prominent activists of the Partizan Theater in the area of South Albania. Directed the central theater group of the National Liberation Army, which gave the play “Elders and War” on May 24, 1944, before the delegates of the Congress of Permet, a date which is regarded as the founding day of the National Theatre.
Andon Pano became active as an actor in Tirana and in December 1944 he entered the Drama School directed by the director Sokrat Mio. After the liberation of the country, in 1945, he was one of the first to participate in the commission for the creation of the State Theater.
Pano specializes in the Soviet Union as an actor and director in Moscow. He married the Russian director Zina Andri, later she also became a well-known director of the Albanian “Popular Theater”.



Andon Pano gave a great help in raising the artistic and cultural level of the artists of this theater. He was a talented actor in the field of comedy. For several years in a row, performed skillfully in many roles, which were not only his highlights, but also of our Theater itself.
Thus we can mention: “Topazi”; “Marriage”; “The Invasion”; “Gergj Dimitrov”; “Halili and Hajria”; “Truffle”; “The Prefect”; “Auditor”; “Seven shaljans” etc.


Pano performed a total of 42 roles from 1945 to 1962. In the part “Dasma e madhe” he played the role of Esat P. Toptani; in the drama “Halili and Hajria” by K. Jakova, 1950, he created an interesting figure of Sulejman Pasha; roles with artistic identity were also those in the drama “Micro bourgeois” by M. Gorky, in the comedy “14 years old bridegroom” by AZ Cajupi.
In the years 1958-1960, he was the director of the “Popular Theater”. In 1965, he was appointed director of the Central Puppet Theater in Tirana. He staged as a director the comedy “Tartufi” by Moliere in 1947 (where he himself played the role of Tartufi).



Andon Pano also succeeded in staging several Albanian dramas such as: “Besa” by Sami Frasher (1951); “Heroes” by Kasem Trebeshina (1951); “Girl from the village” (1954);
He left a deep impression, especially his appearance on the stage of the comedy “The Prefect” by B. Levonja, under the directorial leadership of the Russian A. Kricko, where the play of Mihal Popi in the role of Qazim Mulleti, as well as the care to create a comic and sarcastic atmosphere.




From the plays of foreign authors, the drama “Micro bourgeois” by M. Gorky (1948), “In the garden of lilacs” by C. Soledar (1955), “The family matter” of Eshin Ljutevski” were well received; in 1956 was the assistant director of V. Bortkos in the staging of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” in 1960.



Andon Pano was also a critic and publicist, one of the knowledgeable people of the theater, who wrote a lot about it, about the artists and the different shows, as well as the manuscript text of the history of the “Popular Theater”, 20 years in the “Popular Theater,” a period that includes the years since its foundation in 1964.
Laureate of the Republic Award in 1955 and has been honored with other awards. He held the title “Merited Artist” .
Andon Pano passed away on April 24, 1993, one day after his birth date!
