In Albanian films, we have even seen a considerable number of performances by kids’ actors, and not only in children’s movies.
Some of them caught the eye of the audience even in adult films for their skill and play, regardless of their age at that time.
Selma Sotiriadhi’s ever-smiling face has been one of the most beloved babies. It was activated for the first time in 1974, as a child in primary school with the movie “The Youngest City in the World”. The little girl walks with an ice cream in her hand and asks: “Mom, mom, how big is the city”? How large is the sky?
A year later, in 1975, she caught the eye of the audience with the role of Jeta, in the movie “Beni walks by himslef”.
Few were the ones who saw her and were not amazed by this little doll-like girl who got the nickname “tullumbace (balloon)”, and they were even surprised at her young age to show acting skills for a promising future in acting.
It’s not for nothing that “Ben walks by himself” made a lot of noise and was awarded with several national and international awards, among others, for the very real and sincere interpretation of the childrens, especially Herion Mustafaraj in the role of Ben, but also Selma as Jeta “tullumbace”.
For this reason, Selma Sotiriadhi was later active in 3-4 other films such as Tefta in “Tomka and his friends” – 1977; the sister of the bride in “My wedding toast” – 1977; Shyqo’s granddaughter, Valbona in “Spring in Gjirokaster” – 1978; Aferdita in “Mesonjetorja” – 1979; “Student’s Father” – 1988.
Then she did not appear again, because instead of acting, she had chosen foreign languages, later working as a translator.
Although our “little” actress Selma was considered an amateur actress, to the extent that she became active, the Albanian film for children would have no meaning without the name Selma Sotiriadhi, the “tullumbace” of Albanian cinema.
