Viktor Stratobërdha (1925-2000)
The director of the first Albanian movie “Tana”.
Born in Korce on May 15, 1925. He was a participant in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War. Immediately after his release, Viktor worked for a while as an officer in Division V in Gjirokaster.
Stratoberdha completed his studies at the VGIK Film Institute in Moscow for directing in 1955. While still a student, he was hired by the director Sergej Jutkevic as one of the second directors in the shooting of the joint film “Skenderbeu” – 1953.
After finishing his studies, started working at Kinostudio “Shqiperia e Re” in 1955. He began shooting documentary films, trying to make the films realistically reflect life with its good and bad, and not in “bouquet of roses” way, a tendency that had begun to appear in our film.
Stratoberdha made the documentary “Happy Holidays” and in the same year, 1955, he made an effort to give artistic values to the documentary film by weaving between real events and stagings, a kind of connection between the documentary film and the artistic film. This was the movie “Congratulations fellow students”.
Viktor made the first attempt to shoot a short film, “We laugh because we cannot cry”, but the film was censored and only four short films remain from that film under the title “Why so?”.
He continues this effort by shooting a film of a special character, despite the difficult technical conditions that our cinematography had at the time, built with some subjects that presented negative phenomena of everyday life – a consequence of a still low level of the emancipation of Albanian society at that time.
It had its origins in a script written by the comedian Dionis Bubani, without an actor and used as a link a child who passed from one environment to another. It was an effort of “Cinema Verite”. This film had strong reactions and was not shown in its entirety.
Sometime later, his special essays were placed in the newspapers. In 1956, director Viktor Stratoberdha was persecuted and deported in Berat as a dissident of the regime.
After the 90s, he emigrated with his family to Greece and then moved to Montreal, Canada, where he passed away on May 31, 2000.
It was first published on the Facebook page in May 2020.
