Kozma Dushi
Prominent singer of the 70s and 80s. Albanian music master
Dushi was born in Berat on August 23, 1954. Stayed in Berat for 24 years, the best of his life. He studied at the conservatory of Tirana for singing in the period 1980-1985. Childhood flows as it was at that time for every child, with those toys. The Kid Dushi like to recite poems, he liked, short, beautiful poems, reciting them in front of their friends or at any party.
Then the desire to sing arises, perhaps because Komai’s father, although who was not a real singer, sang very well. The family consisted of 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters, of whom the older brother, Dhimitri and Kozmai, are singers.
Finishes the 8-year- class “Thimi Tani” School in Berat, being active in singing. This catches the eye of his teacher, Bardhyl Ruzi, who sends Kozmai to the “Pioneer’s House” to enter the path of singing.
At the age of 11, he took part in the Festival of 1964 for pioneers, who were organized in districts at that time. He sang in these festivals until the age of 15 (1968).
Kozma Dushi has completed High School for Zootechnics – Veterinary. 17-18 years old is under the music lessons of Professor Sotir Koci “Merited Artist”, a professional musician who had finished his studies in Czechoslovakia and who practiced almost all musical instruments.
He was a very good oboist and conductor of the variety show in Berat. The respected professor will ask Kozma which music he would like to sing, popular or “light” music. Komai’s answer will be for the second genre, as if he feels it more.
At the age of 17, as a singer, he will be a member of the Variety Troupe of Berat, whose director was the well-known Viktor Stratoberdha.
Dushi keeps many beautiful memories with this troupe. Besides singing, Kozma Dushi likes fishing and hunting. Then he is sent to do his mandatory military service in Sazan.
After being released from the army, he took part in April of the following year, 1976 in the musical Survey (anketa) with Flamur Shehu’s song, “Shqiponjat e kaltersise” dedicated to Albanian pilots.
A few months later, again in the Survey, he will sing Todi Dri’s song, “When I met my friend”. In the same year, in 1976, he participated in the 15th Song Festival in RTSH with a song titled “Greetings from Furnace / Përshëndetje nga furrnalta” by Nikollaq Bulo with lyrics of Zaho Puci. The song, although sung by a debutant like Dushi at the time, entered the final night.
In the 16th Festival of 1977 sings a song by Nazmi Lishi, “When it was sung for love / Kur i kendohej dashurise”. In 1978, at the 18th Festival, he sang Alfons Balliq’s song, “Preheri yt o Nene” (dubbing was Aferdita Zonja); Dushi dedicates his participation and success in Festivals to the great conductor, Ferdinand Deda.
Meanwhile, at the age of 24, he competes and wins at the conservatory as a canto student in 1980. Kozmai’s professor at that time was the well-known John Atahanasi. At the same time, Gaqo Cako, Ramiz Kovaci and Nina Mula were Kozmai’s professors.
Precisely in the last year at school, he met his wife. Dushi successfully completed his studies at the Tirana Conservatory for singing in the period 1980-1985.
During the time of the school, he spends time in the State Theater (Varieteja e Tiranes) directed by the actor Sulejman Dibra and conductor Alqi Kareco.
Dushi defends his diploma with the orchestra of the state variety troupe. Rejects the offer to join the Army Ensemble. It will be only the state Estrada, an institution that will work for about 25 years.
He left Albania for Greece in 1991. Returned to Albania in 1999. During the years of endless transition, he spends a good part of the time unemployed. Kozma Dushi is and remains a great name of Albanian music.
