I
This drama as one of the masterpieces of Shkodran and All-Albanian theater was written exactly at the time when Albania needed more than ever to be emancipated in order to get out of the long backwardness, especially in the deep mountainous areas, where the influences of the canon and customs were the biggest. The very title of the drama leads to those customs of those dark times for our Albanian society, when the girl who was getting married was given a cartridge as a dowry, among other things, which her husband had the right to use, if he saw a fault or his wife’s mistake and decided about her life with self-judgment, using the cartridge that had come in the bride’s dowry.
After putting on the stage of “Miggen”, this show made a big fuss. Its high ideological-artistic level, the perfect play of the actors of the “Migjeni” Theater Troupe, the high professional level of the director, then newly graduated and who would later become one of the most famous directors in Albania, Serafin Fanko .
All these components came together so harmoniously, turning this show from its premiere into a landmark event and ensuring its undisputed success. The drama “Bullet in dowry” immediately entered their lives and the citizens of Shkodra became the first critics who would give this great work of their writer, their son Fadil Kraja, the place it deserves.
This is best shown by the endless number of performances, which in 1973 reached 250 times, and a few years later the “Migjeni” Theater Company performed its 500th performance, thus breaking a record that had never happened before. before, but at the same time breaking a record in the geography of its shows, which counts 22 districts, in cities, but also in the youth actions of that time.
In the first hundred performances, the role of Gjelosh Nika was played by the unforgettable Preng Lëkunda “Deserved Artist”, who unfortunately passed away during a performance on the stage of the cinema-theatre in H/C Vau-Dejës. Then this role would be played with great success by another very prominent actor in the theater and cinematography “Honored Artist” Ndrekë Prela. The drama “Fisheku ne pajë” has been staged by dozens of professional and amateur troupes in Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and the Diaspora, thus showing that this work is one of the most successful in the entire Albanian dramaturgy fund. The theme of the drama
The cartridge in the dowry arises from the urgency to get rid of a “burden”. The bullet was inserted into the bride’s dowry by the father. Upon arriving at the new home, she gave the bullet to her husband, giving him the right to use it, with his father’s permission, in case he committed adultery or dishonored the family. The next day, the bride shows her dowry set to the women of the neighborhood, where everyone knows what was hidden inside, but no one talks about it, no one has ever seen it, but they know its purpose. The canon describes well the meaning of this lead in the bride’s dowry.
The canon of Lekë Dukagjini is a compilation of Albanian rules and customs with a legal-social character. These rules served for so many centuries in a self-governing system that dominated the tribes of northern Albania, and today these rules still have a significant impact on Albanians, citizens of Kosovo, and Albanians who have emigrated to other countries. Etymologically, the term canon derives from the Turkish word alqanun, which agrees with rules and approvals
