December 3, 1926 – October 2, 2013.
In the distinguished constellation of actresses who founded the National Theatre, Drita Pelinku is an irreplaceable name that, rightly, has been described as one of the important foundations of the Albanian Scene.
Born in Vlore, on December 3, 1926, she was the only girl who competed in December 1944 and entered the first Albanian dramatic art school in January 1945, breaking all the norms of feudal society and not without consequences.
She was the only girl among many men, such as: Kadri Roshi, Naim Frasheri, Prokop Mima, Lazer Filipi, etc. In 1946, she is a professional actress of the “Teatri Popullor”. In her long career, over six decades, her artistic creativity is diverse and successful and includes three areas: First, as a theater and cinematographer, Drita has about 150 roles, but it should be noted that more than half of them are main roles, even leading female roles in world of Albanian dramaturgy. They are roles that would be the envy of European and World Theater actresses, such as Luiza Miller “Intrigue and Love” by Schiller, Goneril “King Lear”, Gertrude “Hamlet”, Mrs. Ford “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by Shakespeare , Diana “The Gardener’s Dog” by Lope de Vega, Zoicika “A lost letter” by Kareggiales, Betti “Arturo Ui, Mother Karrar “Mother Karrar’s rifles” by Brecht, Mariana “Tartuffe” by Moliere, Clarisse “Servant of two masters ” by Goldoni, Nihal Hanem “The Strange One” by Nazim Hikmet, Zebelina “Kremlin Hours” by Pogodin, Mei “The Oldest Profession” by Paola Vogel, Rose “Rose”; Bude in “Pomegranate Flowers” by Kole Jakove, Nena “The fisherman’s family” by Sulejman Pitarka, the wife of the general “The General of the Dead Army” by Kadare, etc.
She is qualified as an actress with brilliant, with a melodious and full voice, with a fluent speech, with a graceful plastic and above all, having a sensitive soul of an artist, she has been one of the actresses that has attracted the attention of all the Albanian directors or foreign, entrusting it with the main role. These roles, today, are a golden fund of the National Theatre. Secondly, in the field of directing,
Dritas’ activity is quite broad. Dozens of exams, from simple exercises to full performances, are unforgettable for the auditoriums of the Academy of Arts. How many generations of students, today, personalities in the field of theater and cinematography, have had the honor and the great fortune to work and learn from the craftsmanship, passion and talent of Drita.
Also, she has staged several pieces, such as on the stage of the National Theater, on the stage of the “Petro Marko” theater in Vlora, as well as in the Theater of Nations in Skopje. Even today, the plays “Immortality” in Vlora, “Sisters” in National Theater and in the theater of Skopje or “Much Ado About Nothing” (Shakespeare), “Shadows” (Ibsen), “Swan Song” (Chekov), ” The star without a name” (Sebastian), “The exception to the rule” (Brecht), “Servant of two masters” (Shakespeare), “Monserrat” (Rables), “Corruption in the Palace of Justice” (Ugo Betti), etc.; and an endless series of fragments and etudes with students.
Thirdly, at the National Theater, Drita completed a 2-year course under the leadership of Vladimir Kricko, the successful Russian director, in the subjects of acting, plastic arts, world literature and psychology. For 24 years in a row, since 1976, her experience, intelligence, and professional culture have served as the premises for her to be called one of the most valuable pedagogues of the performing arts. With the patience of a good mother and her pedagogical skills,
Drita has brought out from her hands dozens of actresses who are making their debut in the four corners of Albania and abroad. For her special and valuable contribution, Drita Pelingu has been appreciated (not so much, especially during the years of the dictatorship), with various awards, orders, titles and medals.
In 1986, she was awarded the title of “Merited Artist”. In 1996, she won the national award “Ismail Qemali”, while in 1997, the board of directors of the American Institute of Biographies, evaluating her for her career achievements and contribution, chose her among the 500 most influential leaders.
This publication is in permanent storage in the Library of Congress, Washington DC. In 2000, it was evaluated by the President of the Republic with the high title “Great Master”. Entire pages have been written about Drita Pelinku in newspapers, books and magazines, monographs have been written, verses have been woven, with love, respect, why not also with art, dozens of television and radio shows have been made, and an artistic documentary has been dedicated to him.
Drita Pelinku is really a big name, an extraordinary actress, who does come from the Albanian Scene. She has been, is and will remain a model of the true Albanian artist! Gratitude and respect for what you gave to this nation, to this people who never forget your dedication, passion, talent and love that you showed for it!
OTHERS ABOUT HER:
Kadri Roshi “I have a great social obligation , for which I had thought of writing a letter to the president. I would highlight the artistic relations with the actress who I think will rarely come to the Albanian stage and who has never been appreciated, the actress for whom I find it difficult to I’m not talking about my daughter, not even my son. But I am convinced that I am talking about the great artist Drita Pelinku. She is the people’s artist!
Pjeter Gjoka “… for her there was no big or small role, but she believed that every role requires great effort, passion, attention, intelligence, work with details, love for the role. The figures created by this actress are many, that’s why her work is a lot, the efforts to reach her goal to be the most worthy in the profession. In all her work, this actress has an obvious feature: modesty…”
Piro Mani “. .. she managed to understand what was the main thing in the drama to highlight it more on stage, everything as vitally and artistically … She is an actress who has moved with time, increasing her skills in terms of artistic realization, as well how has our art and theater in general evolved…”
Drita Haxhiraj “As a partner, I felt a truth in her warm play, mainly for the partner. For example: the way she communicated with Naim Frasher in “Fishermen`s Family” was virtuoso, so that there were moments when I was leaving the role when Rolandi said to me, ‘look, they have it all in their heads’. She was great on stage!”
Ndrek Shkjezi “… Drita is an excellent actress. In the drama “Pomegranate Flowers” she showed herself as a great actress, very convincing and sincere. When I played with her in this drama, she tried to convince me to commit murder with the words: ‘A good shot costs eight tins of gold’, she said so greedily that the other character, who was me, convinced me to act , to kill. At the end of the play, when Bude takes off the mask, after failing, she, the big joke, tells it with a rare mastery where she shows the character of the class that represented ‘these claws should have been taken out in time’…”
Timo Flloko “I think that she could be more active in cinematography … a rare actress. In the movie “The Man with the Cannon”, she was an example of work, intelligence, from which young people can learn a lot. She prepared the role very well before the shoot and during the shoot she did not cause obstacles, on the contrary she stimulated the creation process and was a very good helper, for the partner and for the director…”
Bujar Lako “Drita is an actress not only emotional, but and thought. He knows how to harmonize true artistic emotions with the total thought of each character. We can say that she is an actress who knows the secrets of acting mastery. An actress of many planes, in a wide artistic range, mainly of the psychological, dramatic plane…” Rajmonda Bulku “I would like with all my heart that you were forever! For the only reason because Drita is special, she is an excellent, cultured actress, but she also left an extraordinary mark on teaching, at ILA. She is an actress rare, unique. I have worked with her and I say with conviction that she is an excellent teacher and this is one of the most valuable things about Drita”.
