Hysen Devolli (1924 – 2013)
Painter!
One of the first scenographers of the “Popular Theater”

Born in Tirana on August 11, 1924, in a patriotic family originally from Kosova. At a very young age, he took an active part in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War. After the country’s liberation, due to his outstanding talent for visual arts, he was sent to study in Bucharest, at the Academy of Fine Arts “Nikolae Grigorescu” in Romania, where he graduated in painting.

After returning to his homeland, in 1952 he was appointed to various government positions, first as director of the National Art Gallery and then as director of the scenography department of the People’s Theater and the Opera and Ballet Theater.

During his creative activity, he has realized with high professionalism about 300 works in scenography, which include works such as “The Prefect”, “The Fisherman’s Family”, “King Lear”, “Borana”, “Traviata”, “The Barber of Seville”, ” Bernarda Alba”, etc.

It is not by chance that Hysen Devolli’s name is included in the World Encyclopedia of scenography, which was published in 2012 in the USA.

A very rich artist, Hysen Devolli also made paintings. Many works of the fund bear his signature of the National Art Gallery. With this creativity, he has been well represented in almost all national exhibitions, as well as in the Biennale of Egypt, etc.

Likewise, a wide range of shows belong to his company Albanian philatelic, especially with portraits of prominent figures, as well as the set with Albanian banknotes, issued in 1964.

For his long activity of more than 60 years, Hysen Devolli has been awarded a series of titles, decorations and medals.
Hysen Devolli passed away on March 29, 2013.
