Merita Gjyriqi
Actress of Albanian theater and cinematography.
She born in Kukes, she raised and educated in Tropoje, she educated in Shkoder, graduated in Tirana and worked for more than 20 years with the “Bylis” Theater Troupe in Fier. From north to south, from all Albania!
Mrs Merita is one of the examples when art and our artists built bridges of connection and union between every Albanian province with feelings of patriotism and love for the homeland.
Gjyriqi was born in Kukes on December 20, 1946. Her family had moved to Kukes, but her origin is the town of “Bajram Curri”.
She graduated from the pedagogical high school “Shejnaze Juka” in Shkoder and then worked as a teacher for some time in Tropoje.
At a young age, she engaged in amateur activities with the variety show “Bajram Curri” where, in addition to performing, she was also a soloist.
Merita graduated from the High Institute of Arts for actresses in the drama department where she studied during the period 1968-1972. While still a student, she became active in the beautiful film “Kapedani” in 1972, in the role of a taxi driver, (smoking a cigarette) in a dialogue with the great actor “People’s Artist” Albert Verria:
– “Where you going uncle?” (Ku do vesh xhaxho?)
– “Behind the sun” (Prapa diellit!), uncle Sulo returns!
After graduating from ILA, the actress was appointed to the “Bylis” Theater in Fier, the institution where she worked from 1972 to 2002.
She performed in almost all premieres with this troupe, countless roles together with a wonderful ensemble of actors of the city.
Gjyriqi played both in dramas and comedies where she caught the eye with a beautiful and realistic interpretation, showing high artistic values.
We can mention her roles in the drama “Two shoots in Paris” (1980) masterfully written by Sh. Mita and P. Kulla, in the role of court secretary.
Other theatrical performances with “Bylis”:
“The Echo of that Winter” (1976), “Comrade Niqifor” (1982), “Why”, “The Story of a Girl”, “Unforgettable Years”, “Wounds and Bullets”, “General of a Dead Army”, “The Salem Witches”, “A Liar Wanted”. The comedy “A Liar Wanted” was the last show with the troupe of this theater.

Parallel to the Fierak theater troupe, Merita is also active in several feature films, although in secondary or episodic roles.
In 1974, we see her in the movie “White Roads” in the role of Nuria, a sick woman in a stretcher who they wanted to send her to the hospital for treatment (photos below).
A year later, in 1975, she played the role of a female soldier in a “auto-stop” in the musical film “Spring Trip”.
In 1989, she returned to the interpretation in the film “Waiting Years”
Then it continues in the TV movie “Kosove kurre s`tu nda gazepi” in the role of Hanife, a woman with a child in the cradle fighting with the Serbian Chetniks in defense of her baby, where the embodiment of the Kosovar woman, the Albanian mother, stood out, with pain in the resistance.
Her interpretation in the film continues during the 2000s, so in 2001 she plays teacher Roze in “When the soul passed away”.

“Malli i harruem” (2018)…….Diella.
From 2000 to 2002, she was also a director at the
“Puppet Theater” in Fier.
In 2011, it was evaluated with the “Acknowledgment” certificate for the contribution made here after many years.
Mrs Merita has also participated in several activities with the Dardania Ensemble of Tropoja, as a presenter, especially during the period of the Kosovo war.
After retiring in 2002, actress Merita Gjyriqi left Fieri, her second city, returning to live in her beloved hometown in Tropoja.
There, for four years in a row, she directed the acting group at the Cultural Center of the city of Bajram Curri, staging four shows with the talented children of this center.
