Director, actor, one of the pioneers of the State / Popular Theatre. “Merited Artist”.
Born in Delvina on June 6, 1919. Graduated from the “Normale” secondary school in Elbasan. At a young age, he was involved in the Amateur Theater movement. In 1945, enrolled in the professional course of the Drama Theater in Tirana. In 1946, was sent to study as an actor at the State Institute of Theater Art GITIS in Moscow (S.U), but for health reasons he was forced to return to his homeland after a year.
Later continued his university studies at this Institute in Moscow, successfully completing them in 1959. Malo staged the comedy “After Death” by AZ Cajupi in two versions, the first in the “Popular Theater” in 1950 and the second with students to the high school for actor “Aleksander Moisiu”, in 1966.
From show to show, he emphasize the satirical and stigmatizing side towards Albanian pseudo-patriots and anti-national phenomena. Precisely during the return to the scene of this comedy in 1966, he left the job in the middle, after passing away.
Andrea Malo has also realized with a fine artistic taste and clear thinking the comedy “The Lawyer’s Marriage” by Foqjon Postoli, where care was felt for the graceful characterization of the characters as well as an elegant treatment of the mise-en-scene.
An epic-dramatic format with poetic nuances is set in the drama “Star of the Alps” by Andon Pano.
As a director, Andrea Malo stood out for his sense of humor and the drawing of a gallery of characters, especially in the staging of comedies, especially the works of Albanian authors, for which he provided a valuable contribution.
He made sure that in the whole of the director’s treatment of the stage part, the thin and popular humor stood out, insisted that the actors and all the components of the show had clear Albanian accents and colors.
Malo also wrote two comedies “Po keto ku jane” and “Dhenderr me nishan”. He also staged the plays “Ne tufan” and “E white and black” by Fadil Pacrami, the plays “Makar Dubrova” by O. Korneicuk, “Djali prongeprishes” by E. Rauet; “Doll’s House” by H. Ibsen and the comedy “Marriage” by N. Gogol.
In the latter, the emphasis is on creating the most original characters of the actors. He participated as a co-director with the Russian director Bortko in the staging of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” (1960), one of the greatest achievements of the Albanian Theater.
In 1966, he managed to successfully stage the drama “Uncle Vanja” by A. Cehov, in which he took special care with the actors for the deep meaning of the work, of its characters, especially of the author’s style, aiming meanwhile, a weaving and harmonization between the dramatic and the tragic side with the lyrical, poetic and melodious side.
Andrea Malo was the director and one of the prominent acting teachers at the high school for actors “Aleksander Moisiu”. Malo was characterized by a special love and tact with artists and students, helping to unfold their creative nature in overcoming obstacles and inhibiting psychic factors, in the emergence of organic data thanks to testing and experimentation.
It encouraged the spirit of debate and kept the artistic atmosphere burning. He is one of the first Albanian directors who strongly insists on the understanding and creation of the ensemble in a theatrical performance, for the cultural interpretation of the character, both in comedy and in drama.
Even as an actor, he has performed in many shows. Featured in “Gjido (second son), “Topazi (Kastel Benak)” “Epope of the National Front” (Mit’hat Frasheri) 1947; “Governor of the province” (Ernesti) 1949; “Halil and Hajria” (Selim Bey); “auditor” (Shepkin); as well as in other shows: “The Prefect” (1948); “Heroes” (1951);
